A MP has stated that they believe ‘very serious mistakes were made’ during the former prime minister's time in the role.

Maldons' MP Sir John Whittingdale has released a statement which addresses mistakes made by former prime minister Liz Truss.

His statement is also followed by support for the new prime minister, Rishi Sunak, who has been in the role for just over a week.

In his October update, Sir John said: “I supported Liz Truss in the later stages of the previous leadership contest as I shared her vision of a low-tax pro-growth economy.

“However, I do believe that very serious mistakes were made from the start of her administration including the lack of experience of many of those appointed as Ministers, the failure to explain adequately the rationale for the mini-budget nor how it would be financed, and the abandonment of some key manifesto commitments.

“This led to her decision to resign, and I recognise that the Government owes an apology to those affected by the turmoil in the markets that followed.”

In reference to the new prime minister, Sir John said: “I am pleased that Rishi Sunak is now our new Prime Minister.

“He has a proven track record in Government, and through his interventions as chancellor during lockdown, he successfully protected millions of jobs and businesses.

“I trust that he will do the same as Prime Minister, and that he will do everything in his power to regain economic stability, tackle the causes and impact of the cost-of-living crisis, and earn the trust of the public.

“I recognise that this is a very worrying time for everyone, and that the recurring changes in Government have not helped the situation.

“There are daunting challenges facing our country, both at home and abroad, and what is needed now is a period of strong and stable Government willing to take the tough decisions that will be necessary.

“That is why I believe that it is essential that we now give the Prime Minister every support in leading our country through the very difficult times that still lie ahead – a job which I believe he is well equipped to do.”
