Maldon's MP says he is "deeply honoured" after being awarded a knighthood by King Charles.

Sir John Whittingdale was honoured for his political and public services.

He was among the first people to be knighted by the King, under the advice of the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Sir John has been a Member of Parliament for Maldon since 1992, when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for South Colchester and Maldon.

He is regularly present in the House of Commons, more recently discussing issues including intellectual property rights, the war in Ukraine and technology platforms.

He also previously served as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Following his Knighthood, Sir John said: “I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive the award of a knighthood from His Majesty the King.

“I have been very touched by the many messages of congratulations that I have received from constituents and would like to thank them for their kind words.

“It is a privilege to represent the residents of the Maldon constituency in Parliament, a job that I have thoroughly enjoyed for the past 30 years and which I hope to continue.”
