Otter and Burnham Sailing Club member James Hutton-Penman has claimed the RS Tera National Champion title.

Of the 74 entrants at the Tera Nationals at Netley Sailing Club, in Southampton, several were from the Crouch – both from the Corinthian Otters and Burnham Sailing Club.

They were James Hutton-Penman, Hamish Eckstein, Flynn Davies and Zac Bikhazi in the Tera Pro fleet and Niamh Davies in the Tera Sport Fleet.

There were two further sailors from the Burnham Sailing Club taking part, Josh and Jamie Aldridge.

There were three races over two days of three races on a trapezoid course.

Hutton-Penman broke his mast and ripped his sail in race one of the pro fleet and Eckstein broke his boat, so both came in halfway through the race.

This was not a good start and given there was the possibility of only one discard. Race one was won by Josh Aldridge.

A swift repair with gaffer tape helped Hutton-Penman and Eckstein make it to the start for race two, which Hutton-Penman went on to win, while race three was won by Hayling Island sailor Maisie Letten with Josh Aldridge second and Hutton-Penman third.

Day two was delayed awaiting a sea breeze. The overnight standings had Josh Aldridge leading, Hutton-Penman in eighth including the DNF, Davies in 15th and Eckstein in 17th, counting his DNF.

Jamie Aldridge and Niamh Davies finished all their races and were in 16th and 34th in the Sports fleet.

The Pro boys knew they had no choice but to win the races on Sunday.

Hutton-Penman won races four and six with Eckstein third in both, Eckstein won race five with Hutton-Penman in second, Josh Aldridge picked up two fourth places and a sixth.

Fourteen-year-old Hutton-Penman, from Althorne, on eight points from five counting races, became the RS Tera Pro National Champion to add to his Sport National Championship of last year.

Josh Aldridge finished second on 17 points, Eckstein finished sixth on 30 points and Flyn Davies 18th.

Niamh Davies finished all her races in the Sports fleet and ended up 38th overall – an excellent result.

Jamie Aldridge finished 28th in the Sport fleet.
