HEYBRIDGE Swifts assistant manager Paul Abrahams described the postponement of their Essex Senior Cup quarter-final as a double-edged sword.

Swifts were due to entertain Aveley at Scraley Road on Tuesday night but the pitch was waterlogged.

Abrahams was philosophical about the cancellation of the tie.

He said: “It’s a double-edged sword really.

“The conditions have been horrific recently and it’s difficult to play the way we want to play.

“However, we have to adapt accordingly.

“I think there has been huge progress made since we (manager Jody Brown) took it on.

“Obviously we wanted to play and continue our progress.

“But we have been playing back to back games for a long time now.”

Swifts were looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 3-1 Ryman League division north defeat at fourth-placed Thurrock.

Swifts had taken an early lead through George Cole but a double strike from Michael Toner and a late goal from Ross Gleed sealed the win for the home side.

Abrahams said: “Once again the result didn’t reflect our performance.

“It’s a common theme but if you watch us play and train then I think you can see the progress the club has made.

“And I think you can see our improved performance on match days.

“Unfortunately though when we have the moments in the game when we are on top we haven’t taken them.

“We created good chances, we had two one-on-ones with the keeper and one where the defender was beaten and the ball was passed towards the goal but got stuck in the mud and didn’t go in.

“We could have been three or four goals up but we didn’t take them.

“And when you are playing teams like Thurrock they have their moments in the game.

“And they take their chances and that is what we have to do.”

This Saturday Swifts travel back to Thurrock to take on Romford, who share the Ship Lane ground.
