THE weather has been unsettled over the last fortnight but, when we have got out, there has been some excellent sport with a variety of species.

There are more cod showing up in most areas, some of these early fish are cracking with several reported at over 7lb and most around 3-4lb.

The best baits are squid and lug.

There are plenty of thornbacks inshore and offshore with a marked increase inshore over the weekend with some boats catching up to 20.

These are a mix of smaller fish with the occasional female over 10lb.

The best baits are squid and worm, fish baits work well but are less attractive to the cod so best stick to the squid.

Offshore has been steady with a real mix of fish on the offshore banks, on Saturday we had bass, smoothounds, dabs, thornbacks, whiting, dogfish and gurnard giving the anglers a chance of a surprise fish.

The rivers are picking up with codling, whiting and thornbacks all showing, as the water starts to cool down we will see a big influx of whiting and codling pushing into all areas.

The piers and shore marks are producing well on the big tides for codling, whiting, bass and odd thornbacks, best baits are squid, crab and worm.

Prospects are superb with a genuine chance of some cracking cod just about anywhere in the Estuary.
