MALDON’S battle to avoid relegation from Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division One was not helped by their defeat at Mistley.
Bowling first, the opening pair of Gary Bannister and Freddie Clark (2-31) initially kept Mistley’s innings in check.
However, two significant partnerships developed for the opposition.
Despite spin twins Robb Macmillan (2-54) and Ian Elliott (2-57) taking wickets, Mistley batted around opener Jarryd Walsh, who batted through the innings for an unbeaten 133.
In reply, Chris Harris continued his excellent run of form with a fine 85 from 88 balls, until he was adjudged LBW.
This setback did not deter Maldon, as they needed a manageable 130 from the last 20 overs.
Skipper Martyn Coker took the attack to Mistley with powerful strokes around the ground, en route to a breezy 47 from 44 balls, but it was not quite enough as Maldon eventually lost by 58 runs.
This defeat leaves Maldon in 11th position out of 12 in the division and they travel to Worlington on Saturday.
