MALDON Golf Club held its past captains’ competition for the John Rigby Memorial Trophy.

The event, for a striking cut-crystal bowl weighing in at approximately five kilograms, preceded the Past Captains’ Dinner.

John Rigby was a three-time captain of the club (1955, 1959 and 1968), honorary secretary from 1984 to 1989 and vice-president from 1990 to 1992.

Nine past captains competed in a singles stableford competition which this year was won by immediate past captain Pete Hawkins (5) with 39 points.

Second was Terry Marchi (12) on 33 with Rob Holland (16) in third on 32.

Seventeen past captains attended the 1970s-themed, black-tie evening meal along with their guest, current club captain Jim Culleton.

This week’s main club competition for the men’s section was the Captain’s Cup, first contested in 1997, and therefore one of the more recent trophies competed for at Maldon.

Fifty-four players entered the competition and the winner with a fine stableford score of 42 points was Roy Hurren (27).

Second was Sam Cummins (9) with 41, third was Colin Gooday (12) with 38, on countback from Mark Hinton (7), while Elliot Hawkins (18) continued his rich vein of form to secure fifth place on 37.

All except Gooday succumbed to cuts in their playing handicaps.

Two of the club’s past captains claimed the nearest-the-pin prizes, with Keith Locke winning on the par three fifth/14th and George Watson grabbing the bottle of wine for the closest second shot to the par four sixth/15th.

The June monthly medal was combined with the Limit Cup which is contested by male members of 20 handicap and above.

Results: June Medal: 1 Mike Kempen nett 74, 2 Stuart Reece-Ford nett 75 (ocb), 3 Tom Bownes nett 75 (ocb), 4t Paul Nash nett 75. Limit Cup: 1 Paul Nash nett 75, 2 Alan Syrett nett 76, 3 Tony Woolfe nett 79.

Maldon’s ladies competed for the Mynott Cup, another stableford contest.

The winner this year was Mary King with 33 points.

Second was Margaret Caviel on 29 with Sue Gardiner third on 19.

Maldon’s seniors’ section played for the Coates Bowl.

From the field of 18, the winner, with 32 stableford points, was Tony Reece-Ford, on countback from Colin Pinn.

Third place went to Neil Clark on 31, on countback from Eric Bane.
