MALDON Golf Club’s men’s section continued their Ben Volta Winter League action with round 12, another betterball, stableford competition.

Yet again there was a great turnout with 30 pairs competing for league points and the honour of winning on the day.

All enjoyed a fine, dry morning, although later in the round the wind gusted very strongly to test everyone’s golfing skills to the maximum.

The tough conditions late-on clearly didn’t affect everyone and there were still some excellent scores.

Winning this week with 44 points were Jim Scott and Peter Leforgeais.

Second place went to Dave Poynton and Nigel Cook on 42.

The third to fifth places were decided on countback with three pairs all returning 41 points.

Tony Last and Terry Marchi grabbed third place, Maldon’s greenkeepers Tom Bownes and Stuart Reece-Ford were fourth, while father-and-son Pete and Elliot Hawkins were fifth.

In stark contrast to last week’s nearest-the-pin winner, 83-year-old Peter Harper, the winner this week was 18-year-old Elliot Hawkins, whose approach shot to the par four sixth/15th hole finished 12 inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie and four points.

The mystery prize for nearest-the-pin on the par three fifth/14th went to Dave Purkiss.

Three rounds remain to be contested in this year’s winter league and only nine points now separate the top four pairs, so it’s still all to play for in the remaining three weeks.

The popular Saturday afternoon swindle, played in teams of three or four, with the best two scores to count, was won this week by the three-ball of Paul Neale, Dave Allen and Nigel Cook with 84 points.

Second on 83 were Pete Hawkins, Eddie Baker and Malcolm Burnett.

The Maldon Ladies’ section has continued with its winter programme, with two rounds of the winter pairs competition plus a fun competition.
