PAUL Shires put together two back-to-back rounds of nett 70 to secure his first singles title at Maldon Golf Club, winning the Basil Bright Trophy.
Going into the second round of the 36-hole competition, Shires was in joint fourth place but only one shot behind the leading three golfers, who were tied on nett 69.
His second consecutive nett 70 was good enough to overtake the leading pack and claim the prize by two clear shots.
Second place overall went to Dave Poytnon with a total of 142, on countback from Ted Ellis.
There was also a countback on 143 with Mike Kempen just beating Pete Hawkins to fourth spot.
Mike Kempen’s nett 68 in round two was the best score of the day, while Martin Read shot a nett 69.
The nearest-the-pin prizes went to John Meakes and Dave Purkiss.
Maldon’s Seniors continued with their busy calendar of events with two more friendly matches and two club competitions.
The home match against Braintree Seniors was reduced to a nine-hole contest due to bad weather and the result was a four all draw.
In the away match at Burnham-on-Crouch Golf Club they suffered a narrow defeat by 4½-3½.
The Seniors’ Past and Present Captains competition was won for the second year in a row by Mike Worden, with Chris Pratt in second place.
