THIS week in Down Memory Lane we take a look at Tilbury Fort.

We often talk about the history of the fort but what about the people who lived and worked there?

In the centre right picture we see children playing just outside the Watergate in 1868 with a soldier looking on perhaps keeping a watchful eye on them.

Top right we see children from 1940 again just outside, probably because they had to be more careful inside.

Bottom, we see the soldiers’ barracks just after the war.

You can see there is some bomb damage to the far end but it was never repaired as the fort was decommissioned in 1960s and was pulled down. Centre left we see the home guard practising there bayonet drill just in case we were invaded.
