AN MP is calling for a full review of Castle Point’s drainage system as she fears it cannot cope with average rainfall.
Rebecca Harris fears the problems with the borough’s drains is much more widespread than the focus of the Government’s review into the flooding on Canvey.
She gave the example of Jotmans Lane, Benfleet, where the manhole covers were lifting up in the latest downpours.
She said: “Once the inquiry is complete we need to look at the fact there are a lot of areas where the drainage system isn’t coping.
“We need a full review of the infrastructure in the borough, once the immediate issue of flooded homes is done, to point out what is going on with it across the borough.
“Once we have done what we can to protect people’s homes, we can look at the rest of the infrastructure, which is not really coping with the current level of demand.”
