Time to inspect all the drains, says Castle Point MP

First published in South Essex

AN MP is calling for a full review of Castle Point’s drainage system as she fears it cannot cope with average rainfall.

Rebecca Harris fears the problems with the borough’s drains is much more widespread than the focus of the Government’s review into the flooding on Canvey.

She gave the example of Jotmans Lane, Benfleet, where the manhole covers were lifting up in the latest downpours.

She said: “Once the inquiry is complete we need to look at the fact there are a lot of areas where the drainage system isn’t coping.

“We need a full review of the infrastructure in the borough, once the immediate issue of flooded homes is done, to point out what is going on with it across the borough.

“Once we have done what we can to protect people’s homes, we can look at the rest of the infrastructure, which is not really coping with the current level of demand.”

Rebecca Harris is going to get awfully dirty if she wears her twinset and pearls down into Canvey's sewerage system.

I call it jumping on the band wagon.
The drains were fine until Castle Point planning allowed more houses to be built.
She as an MP knows Houses are needed but the water companies never have a say in the planning

Build below sea level, I would have thought anyone with a brain would have known floods were inevitable ... carry on building on Canvey and the island will sink beneath the waves.

Time the council looked at better routes of the island and stopped any further building, I dread to think what will happen when the next disaster happens ... and there will be one, it is just a matter of time! I bet Ray Howard will be the first to leave and everyone else retained due to blocked roads, emergency vehicles etc.

Time Canvey and the residents was given some real consideration rather than wait until it is too late!

So now Canvey has travellers in car parks, do what they have done in other areas and see how quickly they move ... surround the site with vehicles blocking their entry / exit ... in tow other areas it took only a few hours to be rid of them.
