Kind-hearted members of a closing church group gave one final generous donation to help children with physical and learning difficulties.

Witham Spiritualist Church has donated a massive £21,600 to Southview School, in Conrad Road, Witham.

Rising costs and an elderly membership meant the church group was forced to close permanently after 42 years, however members wanted to see its remaining funds put to good use in the community and collectively chose Southview to benefit.

Julian Cochrane, headteacher of Southview School, said: “It is extremely unusual to have a chunk of money like this coming in.

“People are incredibly generous to the school, but usually the money comes from people doing sponsored events and is a few hundred pounds.

“I would like to say a resounding thank you and give them an absolute assurance the money which has been donated will go specifically towards supporting the children.”

Carole Turner, president of the church, said: “We thought the school was a good choice because every penny we give will be used in the school.

“We were all very sad the church had to close, but something good has come out of it.”

Although the 74-pupil school is funded by the Government, some projects at Southview rely on public donations.

Mr Cochrane said: “Donations of this sort mean we can provide the extra things our children need but there is no funding for. Things like music therapy are not funded, but it is hugely important for our children.

“It is just one of those things which makes their lives that little bit better.”

No specific projects have been identified for the funding, however options including upgraded play equipment will be explored.

“We have said to the church we would welcome any ideas they have got and if it was used for a specific piece of equipment we would of course welcome them back to see it,” Mr Cochrane added.
