Town leaders have spoken of the community’s shock at the second murder in the district in a year.

The recent attack comes just a week after Matthew Smith was sentenced to a life sentence with a minimum of 19 years for killing Becky Parker at her home in Booth Place, Burnham.

The latest attack has sent fresh shock waves through a normally peaceful town.

Miriam Lewis, Maldon District Council leader, said: “We were just about to go into a meeting yesterday afternoon when the helicopter came across so we knew there was something happening.

“We were interrupted by a senior policeman.

“It was very, very alarming and upsetting.

“It has only happened shortly after the judgement in the Burnham murder case.

“It really makes you look at the people around you.

“I only see good people in the Maldon district.

“I wouldn’t expect anything like this to happen.

“It really, really makes you think.

“People do these things and never consider the consequences.

“It really is awful.

“I didn’t know the family, but my daughter knew the victim’s sons and they are such a tight knit community the young people in Maldon as they all know each other.

“I can’t imagine being in the situation of the family this morning.”
