Plans for lighting on a recreation area are not “dead in the water” according to a councillor.

On Monday Braintree Council decided to refuse Sible Hedingham Parish Council’s request for floodlights by the courts on the field off Recreation Road to enable sports teams to play after dark.

The lights would have been on from dusk until 9pm, but about 20 residents objected to the plans.

The council refused the application on the grounds the light would disturb badgers and the neighbouring houses.

Councillor John Skittrall, who heads the Recreation and Amenities panel for Sible Hedingham, said: “I am surprised because I have never seen a badger on the recreation ground and we made sure the neighbouring houses would not be impacted by the lights."
