TWO Cinderella fundraisers wanted to go to the ball – so organised their own.

And now, after 25 years of arranging charity balls, they have raised £36,000 for St Helena Hospice.

Marilyn Gooch and Jane Sampson had always wanted to get glammed up and attend a proper ball, but had never received an invitation.

So they decided to organise their own and raise some money for the charity at the same time.

Over the years, they have held events at Clacton’s Royal Hotel and Colchester Garrison Officers’ Club, as well as the Stokeby- Nayland Hotel, Golf and Spa club.

Mrs Gooch, 60, of The Street, Tendring, said: “The main reason for doing it was to have an evening out. We just wanted the opportunity to glam up a bit.

“The first year about 170 people turned up and in the past we’ve had as many as 220.

“Lots of people have made it their annual gathering before Christmas. Calling us ‘Cinderellas’ is an apt description as we really just wanted to go to a ball.”

Since the first ball 25 years ago, the pair have raised £36,000 for the hospice.

Now after more than two decades, the women are hanging up their ballgowns. They were recognised for their achievements and presented with bunches of flowers at their anniversary ball.

However, they are still keen to continue the tradition, so hope someone may come forward to organise future balls.
