TIPTREE is not just famous for its jam but also its Exmoor ponies.

Tiptree Heath is the main grazing area for eight of the resilient and popular breed of pony.

Some are moved to other areas during the year to ensure the heath’s continued vitality.

Essex Wildlife Trust runs the heathland and the ponies have been on the common, known for its heather, since 2011.

From May to August, eight ponies graze on the beautiful heath but four leave at the end of the summer when the grass dries up and they go to Little Baddow Heath at Danbury.

After a month they move to another Essex Wildlife Trust site at Great Holland Pits, before moving on to Tollesbury just before Christmas.

The remaining four graze on the heath through to January but this week they left for Tollesbury.
