A HEARING to decide if developers should be allowed to build 94 homes in Southminster will get underway next Tuesday.

The controversial plans for Theedhams Farm, Steeple Road, were unanimously rejected by Maldon District Council last May.

Campaigners fear, if given the green light, it would damage a community they say is already at breaking point.

The outline plans for 94 homes, of which 28 would be affordable, also includes a new northern bypass and will see Steeple Road converted to a cul-de-sac.

The site, comprising farmland and derelict buildings west of Steeple Road and north of Scotts Hill, is earmarked for development by L A Sibley.

There would also be land reserved for a future medical centre.

L A Sibley claimed the council’s reasons for refusal “cannot be sustained” describing the plans as in a suitable location.

Planning officers had recommended approval of the plans but councillors went against their recommendation.

Back on November campaigners admitted they had “expected” an appeal to be launched.

They believe Southminster does not need any more homes and said concerns surrounding the medical centre and flooding remained big issues with the application.

The hearing will take place at Maldon District Council’s offices in Princes Road, Maldon, on July 5 from 10am.
