Essex County Council confirms street lights to switch off as normal for New Year

Maldon and Burnham Standard: No change to street light switch off scheme for New Year No change to street light switch off scheme for New Year

Street lights will switch off tonight as clocks strike midnight to mark the start of a New Year.

Essex County Council (ECC) has confirmed it will not be suspending or altering its part-night lighting scheme, despite the prospect of party-goers walking home in the early hours of the morning.

The scheme currently operates in Braintree, Chelmsford, Colchester, Maldon and Uttlesford districts, and is expected to roll out across the rest of the county in early 2014.

People walk home on busy Friday/Saturday nights with the lights off already. That said, I am a bit sympathetic towards anyone who would usually get a taxi while out, god knows it's hard to get a taxi in the early hours of New Years Day.

As negative as this may sound, there will be opportunist attacks in the darkness and the council will end up turning them back on.

Strange how local authorities seem hell bent on more houses being built in the county but, despite all the additional income gained, ECC is unable to offer one of the most basic services we have quietly enjoyed over many decades...

In Mersea Road, an unexpected positive side effect has been observed. The drunken vandals that smash wing mirrors off cars, jump on the bonnets and generally scream shout and argue waking us up can no longer see what they are doing.... It's been brilliant !!!! When they announced the great switch off I thought we would find it worse, not the case, there has been no damage certainly along our stretch since it started..... I left for work at 4am the Sunday before Christmas and i was rather amused by how some of them were meandering along the road arms out like zombies more or less feeling their way along !!!!! I carry a pocket torch if I come home late, no problem !!!!

Didn't realise we had a lock down or curfew.... When I go out despite risking turning in to a pumpkin, I may come back early hours, I just don't smash anyone's cars up or keep them awake by shouting and screaming.....I also leave or arrive from work at all hours of the night or early morning as do many people !!! We are not all 9-5 !!!!!

I walk to the train station at 4:30 in the mornings and I have to use my phone just to see the pavement and i'm not exaggerating by any means.

There are plenty of vulnerable spots on my route where opportunist muggers etc could strike. I think in the winter months 5am is a little late for turning the lights back on. Surely the councils have looked at what time train journeys start each morning and consider that people have to walk the streets..... Lets start thinking a little more ECC. :/

They'll never admit to the crime rate going up due to the lights going off....in fact they say there's "evidence to show having the lights out reduces crime'.
But I bet they never turn the lights off on the high crime estates to try & prove it!!

it is more worrying that even taxi drivers are saying how dangerous it is for anyone who is walking or trying to cross a road in the dead of night as drivers will only see the person when they run them over!! Surely there is a better way to try and save money? why not make it later eg 3am stead of 12?

If you are referring to the report in the Braintree and Witham Times (published at 3:00pm Saturday 14th December 2013) regarding a Pensioner's suspicion that theft of lead from a shed roof was due to street lights being switched off you should be aware that there was no mention of any evidence whatsoever to suggest whether the theft took place during the 'switched off' hours or the 'switched on' hours - so I think we should not jump to any conclusions either way.

Feel free to visit the BWT Archive and read my comments. I'd be interested in your feedback.

Alternatively, catch the b*gger who did it, apply the thumb screws (if only we could!) and get him to cough up the facts of the case. We might then be in a better position to pronounce on the question of 'lights on' or 'lights off'.

Happy New Year!

Over the next few nights, spectacular meteor showers will be visible in our skies, provided the skies are clear. One of the positive results of less light pollution.

One of my neighbours is a taxi driver, he has not mentioned that... Perhaps they should observe the speed limit and put their lights and specs on !!!

Although I feel for the people who may walk home late at night/early morning I have to say I feel a whole lot safer with the lights off! The last time the lights were kept on for one of the storms we've had recently some poor fella was attacked and mugged right outside my house and another further up the road just hours later! We all know the lights are out from 12-5 so we should either take a torch or get home earlier!

Surely as its pitch black, the pedestrians would see the oncoming car headlights a lot further away and then make no attempt to cross the road!!!!
