Maldon: Petition planned to fight against parking charges

Maldon and Burnham Standard: Maldon: Petition planned to fight against parking charges Maldon: Petition planned to fight against parking charges

A nursery worker is planning to set up a petition to fight a planned parking shake-up.

Julie Papworth, of Dorset Road, Maldon, believes Maldon District Council's proposed evening and Sunday charges would discourage people from shopping in the town and force traders out of business.

She also opposes suggestions the free parking at the council's offices on Saturdays should be axed and charges introduced.

She said: “I support the high street and I think it’s going to be the last nail in the lid of the coffin."

Ms Papworth, who works at Maldon Community Pre-School, in Wantz Chase, claimed the council were “squeezing the wrong people”.

Poor argument. Everyone else charges so why shouldn't we?

I am quite happy that motorists get squeezed; every penny they pay is less that I have to pay in council rates.

Dont blame parking charges for people not shopping inthe High street blame a mix of internet shopping, poor goods in shops and shops that are closed too often. Edward's Walk (for example) is nearly all closed at the start and end of each day when many would like to shop...

You really are naive slack222, if you think any extra money 'squeezed' out of motorists will reduce your council tax!!

Jack222 appears to reflect the ranking of residents, as outlined in a report on the first meeting of the Maldon District Locality Board.
