Captain Ian Bell worked for the Crouch Harbour Authority for ten years until his retirement six years ago.

He was formerly in the merchant navy and also project manager for the lifting of the Mary Rose in 1982 after it lay for 437 years at the bottom of the Solent.

Captain Bell, of St Lawrence, died on August 11, aged 71, of leukaemia.

His wife Margie Bell said: “He lived for his family, his boys and his daughter and his two grandsons, of whom he was very fond of.”

She described him as very sociable and remembered for being fun-loving, friendly and a “mine of jokes.”
