Plans for a national pub chain to appear in Maldon are set to be approved.
District councillors will decide tonight on whether pub giant JD Wetherspoon will take over the former Post Office building in High Street.
The plans, which will bring 37 new jobs into the town, have been recommended for approval by Maldon District Council planning officers after town councillors also backed the idea.
But determined campaigners are hoping for one last attempt at persuading councillors against the proposed changes.
Former publican Gillian Crawford, 45, of Wantz Road, is urging people to speak out at the meeting to change the council’s mind.
She spoke of her disappointment at the recommendation: “I think it’s a real shame.
“I don’t think it’s the right thing, having a big business in the town."

To attend the meeting, visit the council offices in Princes Road at 7.30pm.
