Maldon's waterfront will be a hive of activity on Saturday as rowers make a mad dash up the River Blackwater for charity.

The annual sponsored row, hosted by Maldon Little Ship Club, regularly sees about 100 mad and often fancy dress-clad rowers make their way through the icy waters of the River Blackwater from Hythe Quay.

The event, which is in aid of the RNLI, starts at 12.30pm, with the three-mile course usually taking entrants between 30 minutes and an hour to complete.

As well as colourful fancy dress, rowers compete in crafts as varied as rubber dinghies, canoes, kayaks, rowing dinghies through to whalers, gigs and skiffs.

Hundreds of spectators turn out to enjoy the spectacle, which has been running for three decades and has raised more than £150,000 in that time.

A number of prizes are up for grabs for the different classes of boat, the highest sponsorship and for the best fancy dress entry.
