A date has been set for the rededication of Maldon’s Great War avenue of trees.
In 1935, 180 horse chestnut trees were planted at Promenade Park in memory of Maldon and Heybridge’s Great War heroes, but now only 158 trees stand while plaques originally on the trees have also disappeared.
Following calls for action from local historian Stephen Nunn and resident Colin Pitt, who used to visit the avenue with his grandfather, Maldon District Council plans to unveil a new commemorative display board and three new trees at 11am on November 24.
The Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Lord Petre, together with district council chairman David Williams, will rededicate the trees.
