PEOPLE in the district are being given advice on how to keep the dreaded winter vomiting bug at bay this Christmas.

NHS North Essex, which now incorporates NHS Mid Essex, is warning residents that the bug, called norovirus, is set to make a seasonal appearance.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, chills and muscle aches. The symptoms usually persist for around 24 hours but the bug can stay in the body for around 48 hours.

Dr Pam Hall, public health consultant at NHS North Essex, said: “Norovirus is common in winter and can make vulnerable people, such as the elderly, very ill.

“It is extremely easy to pass on but simple steps can help to stop its spread, principally thorough and frequent hand washing – with particular emphasis on thorough as it is surprising how many germs can survive a hand-wash if not carried out thoroughly.

“If you catch the bug, you should also stay at home and avoid visiting hospital or preparing food until at least 48 hours after the symptoms have gone.”

People are also advised to avoid sharing cutlery and cups.
