A POPULAR boating week has ended after yet another successful event, with more boat entries than the previous year.
Burnham Week ended with a stunning firework show after a week of boat racing on the River Crouch.
High Sheriff of Essex, Charles Bishop and the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Jennifer Tolhurst made an appearance at the event.
There was also a successful duck race to help raise funds for the Essex Air Ambulance.
Paddleboarders volunteered to help collect the ducks as they washed up onshore.
Boating enthusiasts raced for a number of titles including the John Torrance Trophy and the RBOD Bert Clark Memorial Trophy.
Prizes were handed out at a big ceremony at the Royal Burnham Yacht Club.
The winner of the Town Cup was David Evans from the Walton and Frinton Yacht Club.
Charlie Matthews won the John Torrance Fast Handicap, Harry Courts won the John Torrance Slow Handicap and Noah Mathers won the John Torrance Optimists race.
The organisers have thanked everyone who played a part in this year’s event.
Chairman of the event, Annie Reid said: “Burnham Week 2023 was a great success with more boats entered than in previous year and with the biggest Squib fleet we have seen for a while which was a special sight for those people who walked down to Pile House to watch the starts.
“On Bank Holiday Sunday the Duck Race was held to raise funds for the Essex Air Ambulance and the paddleboarders managed to extricate every single duck that had ended up marooned on the mud due to the low tide.
“The Quay and the river were packed on the bank holiday Monday with people watching the arrival of Jack Sparrow and his pirates on the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club pontoon whilst the Burnham on Crouch Coastal Rowing Club hosted the Nelson Cup on the river and the sailing boats racing again from Pile House and the Burnham Sailing Club.
“The Town Cup was raced on the last Saturday with a great start and a very close finish and with the Mayor presenting the winners with the magnificent trophy before the Firework display that evening which concluded the event.”
