AN apprentice from Tiptree is set to tread the boards when he starts work at a theatre.

Woody Whymark will spend a year working with Colchester’s Mercury Theatre technical department, training towards a career in the industry.

The former Thurstable School pupil will spend time learning the disciplines of stage lighting, sound engineering and stagecraft.

He will also spend time working across the theatre’s other departments in order to get a full grounding in theatre operation.

Woody completed his GCSEs at his Tiptree secondary school this summer and has worked extensively with KYDS drama group in the village, providing technical support for its productions.

Woody is the first of three apprentices that will spend one year working with the Mercury Theatre and supported by the Hervey Benham Charitable Trust.

Applications for the 2019/20 apprenticeship will be open in spring 2019.
