WITH regard to the front page item in the Burnham edition of the Standard (May 24).

I have, for a number of years, pressed for a set of railings around the Burnham war memorial to deter undesirable practices.

This included it being used as a deposition for dog mess, a luggage rack and children using it as a launch pad to do wheelies.

A set of railings would also keep together the wreaths laid in November, which although wired together in place, either by way of storm or other means, I have often found them blown away.

I have lost count of the number of times I have retrieved them and reaffixed them in place on the memorial.

Despite all these problems I cannot recall any support at the time from Burnham Town Council or the local Royal British Legion for the proposal of such railings.

By comparison, Maldon’s war memorial is ideally sited in a prominent position, behind railings, with seating around, so the public can view or quietly reminisce.

For, after all, such monuments are sacred to those who gave their all for us.

Finally a few words of praise for the owners of the Cabin Café for taking the time and trouble to highlight this disrespectful practice.
