THE history of the business in and out of the Port of Maldon will be explored in the latest Winter Heritage Talk to be held in the town.

The Quaker Hall on Butt Lane in Maldon has hosted a variety of different talks in the past few months about different aspects of the history of the town, dating back as far as the the 16th century.

On Tuesday, Bronwen Cook will be taking guests through the history of the business and coastal trade of the Port of Maldon in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The topic will be particularly interesting and insightful as throughout most of the trading years, the port went through coastal trade without having any physical records kept.

This was sometimes because of the materials traded being of low value, or because a lot of the trade took place covertly or in secret.

However, some records have survived, which will be explored in detail by Bronwen during the talk to shed some light on what was traded through Maldon’s port so long ago.

There is considerably less trading through Maldon’s port in the present day, with Hythe Quay housing Thames Sailing Barges and tugs for public viewing.

The talk will take place on Tuesday at 7pm and is free to enter, though donations are welcome.
