A DAREDEVIL supervisor has celebrated successfully passing her maths GCSE at the third attempt with a skydive.

Helen Griffin, 42, of Southminster, works as the maths administrator and staff supervisor for Plume Academy in Maldon.

Whilst she has had a successful six years working at the school, she always felt bad for only having an E grade in her maths GCSE.

With some help from a tutor and her academy colleagues, she opened up her result to find she had finally earned her C after three resit attempts.

Whilst the exam scheme for maths and English GCSEs has changed this year, Helen was able to sit the older maths paper, meaning she obtained a C grade.

Helen said: “Third time really is the charm, I’ve never been so pleased in all my life.

“Whilst my role did not require teaching qualifications, being an administrator for the maths department I always felt a little guilty for never having passed the subject at GCSE.

“With a lot of support from Carl Wakefield, the principal, plus a tutor which the academy assigned for me, I began re-learning the syllabus.

“I’ve worked at Plume now for six years, and this is my third attempt to re-sit the exam since I first took it all those years ago.

“It’s been hard work, but I now finally have my C grade, and I’m over the moon.”

Straight after collecting her results, Helen drove down to Perranporth, Cornwall to reward herself with a skydive the following day, which she had booked in anticipation of her success.

She said: “A while ago I made myself book a skydive the day after results and said that I would go through with it if I managed to pass, and now here we are.

“It was an interesting moment opening the results on the day. At first I was skipping around and over the moon that I finally had myself a maths GCSE, and then it dawned on me that I then had to drive hundreds of miles down to Cornwall to do a skydive.

“I needed the push to be able to do it, and I had to register at 8am the next morning, so I bundled my mother and dog into the car and off I went straight away.”
