MALDON carnival is on the verge of collapse after no volunteers came forward following a desperate plea from organisers.

Last month, the Standard revealed that several key committee members are looking to step down this year, while other roles remain vacant.

Organisers had hoped people would come forward at the carnival committee’s AGM last week.

While current treasurer Dave Williams and secretary Jean Haylock have agreed to continue in their roles, no-one has been found to step up and become chairman.

In a final bid to keep the popular event running, an extraordinary AGM will be held in January.

If a new chairman cannot be found the event, which featured a visit by X Factor favourite Chico this year, will fold.

Mr Williams, who had hoped to step down, said: “At the moment [the committee] ceases to exist.

“We had nobody to stand as chairman so we can’t run the committee.

“We desperately need a chairman otherwise there won’t be a carnival next year.

“We have never been this emphatic – but that is what it boils down to.”

Mr Williams said the members may organise an informal meeting to allow those interested to find out what the role involves.

He said: “It is fair enough if you don’t know what you are taking on.

“We are hoping to have an informal chat with them and hopefully convince them that they are the right person to do the job.”

This year organisers also had to forgo a side-line event in Promenade Park with stalls and entertainment due to a lack of volunteers.

A flurry of volunteers in 2013 helped save the event from closure, but unless the same happens in the New Year the carnival will not happen.

A meeting will be held in January. The date and location is yet to be confirmed.
