Always thought you had a bit of a bard in you but didn’t quite knowwhere to start? Or perhaps you’re already writing, but find it hard to get motivated when working alone.

Those wordy types over at Sundown Arts – the voluntary-run arts organisation which puts on all kids of events, often surrounding spoken word – is running a creative writing workshop next month, the idea being to provide a hub for writer types to develop their skills alongside others.

And if you’re feeling brave enough, you’ll be able to give an audience a reading of your work, at a Sundown event that night.

The workshop takes place on Saturday, November 21, at the Beecroft Gallery Theatre, in Victoria Avenue, Southend, from 11am until 4pm.

The team say they will cover a range of creative writing techniques, from monologues and imagery to developing poetry and performance, as well as offering advice and guidance.

Ray Morgan, who is a published poet as well as being the assistant artistic director of Sundown, said: “We live in a very culturally rich town. We’re always bumping into people at gigs and events who say they write.

“It can be a lonely hobby or profession. We put on open mic spoken word events throughout the year and the quality of performers is extremely high but they all seem to do it alongside regular day jobs.

“So, we thought why not put on a day’s workshop at the weekend where local budding writers can flex their writing muscles? It will cover a range of mediums such as monologues or poetry.

“We’ll also help people get inspired with a number of exercises to get their creative juices flowing.

“We always loved Southend Library on Victoria Avenue – so many memories there – so it seems fitting to have this workshop in the building’s new role as a creative hub.

“We’re also inviting delegates from the workshop to join us later that evening at one of our popular open mic events. You never know – they might even be brave enough to perform something they wrote that day!”

Sundown Arts curate all sorts of arts events incorporating music, comedy, spoken word, short film and DJs, as well as providing education workshops.

The workshop fee is £25, which includes lunch and refreshments and entry to Sundown’s open mic event at the Beecroft Gallery Theatre later that evening, which takes place from 7pm to 9pm.
