THE number of violent and sexual crimes being committed in Maldon district has rocketed, a new report reveals.

Last night, the day after Essex Police revealed one of Maldon’s two police stations would close and councillors discussed a 30 per cent rise in violent crime in the district over the last year.

A report, published ahead of Maldon District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee, revealed the number of violent offences reported in the 12 months up to August had risen from 457 to 594.

The number of sexual offences reported increased by 125 per cent, from 32 to 72.
