Hundreds of tributes have been paid to “a cornerstone” of Burnham rugby and larger than life character Phil Mounsey.

Mr Mounsey, 62, moved to Burnham in his early twenties and quickly became heavily involved in Burnham Rugby Union Football Club.

He was captain of the club for many years, first team coach, first team manager, a youth coach and club referee.

Mr Mounsey also played for the Essex County Rugby Team.

Family friend Neville Murray, 40, of Burnham, said: “He was my coach and my brothers’ coach.

“Everyone gave him 100 per cent respect.

“He was very well known across the whole of England in the rugby world.”

His eldest daughter Mandi Maker, of Burnham, added: “I’m just amazed at how one person can touch hundreds of lives."
