Villagers are battling to save their pub from development.

The Compasses pub, in Colchester Road, Great Totham, has been twice threatened by demolition after landlord David Gray wanted to put nine affordable homes in its place.

A design and access statement submitted to Maldon District Council in November, said that it had become “increasingly difficult for the business to remain sustainable” and “it is therefore a more viable option to demolish the existing building and redevelop the site”.

See this week's Standard - out tomorrow - for the full story on the plan to save The Compasses.

This is a real shame. So many lovely pubs are dying out, soon there'll be none left.
This pub however is part of a centuries old mystery and it's loss through demolition would be tantamount to criminal! http://vulpeculox.ne

No problem with pubs being redeveloped; they wouldn't do it if the place made a decent profit. We have too many pubs now as many of us prefer an affordable drink at home.

It's hardly a flash building; tear it down. We need more affordable houses!
