Churchwardens should beef up security at churches, say police

Churchwardens are being asked to beef up security after a spate of church thefts across the district.

Crooks have stolen religious statues and artefacts from four churches in Purleigh, Goldhanger, Wickham Bishops and Stow Maries since the middle of February.

PC Lea Keene, of Maldon Police, said: “We would ask all churches to review their security measures and for people living near any church to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour.

“We have crime prevention tactical advisors who can be contacted via the 101 number for specialist advice on security steps that can be taken.

“We would also like to hear from any antique shops or second hand property dealers who are offered any of the distinctive items taken from these churches for sale.”

The church gets plenty of unfair tax breaks, based solely on some medieval idea that the state should be influenced by them and that we should all support it. No more of my taxes should be spent protecting their premises. They are no more deserving of special attention than, say, the local shop. Buy a few locks and a floodlight or two, seeing as god's obviously not dishing out the thunderbolts.

My comment was more directed to e5mitch, rather than the article itself, who seems to be advocating that more police time and money should be spent, rather than the church sorting it out. Sorry if in your keeness to churn out your flawed reasoning you missed what should have been obvious to you. And no, I am not Jack222. He has his opinions and I have mine.

I agree there is no need to spend taxpayers' money protecting the church. Seeing as the big man himself (!) is out there overseeing things I fail to see what need there could possibly be for anyone else's help.

And of course if the church was damaged this would be part of god's plan and therefore anyone who tried to dick around with his plan would be going to hell etc etc snooze snooze.
