RESIDENTS will have to travel miles to their nearest branch following the closure of Maldon’s Halifax.

The Halifax branch in the High Street is closing for good on Monday, June 5.

It will be the fourth bank to close in Maldon in the last two years.

The Barclays branch closed in August last year, Lloyds closed in February last year and HSBC shut its doors in July 2021.

One resident in his mid-70s, who asked not to be named, expressed his anger after he had to switch to Halifax when Maldon’s’ Barclays branch closed last year.

He said: “I am so angry as there are less and less banks in the High Street.

“I am of a certain age where I find using technology difficult so going to an actual bank is necessary.

“When I worked, I used technology daily, but when you take that technology away you very quickly lose touch with it.

“Lots of industries don’t understand this.

“The staff at the bank have been there a considerable amount of time.”

He added: “My wife is very hard of hearing and the branch do a lot to support her.

“During lockdown they were very helpful over the phone, but I think closing the branch is an error.

“I changed from Barclays when that went, so I just think it’s a shame it is closing.

“I wish there was a petition or something we could do to stop it closing.

“It’s only a small branch, but it is very, very convenient for a lot of people.

“Maldon is a growing town and with new developments. There is an increasing population who would still have a use for it.”

The remaining banks in Maldon High Street will be Santander and NatWest.

The nearest Halifax branch with counter service is 10 miles from Maldon in Chelmsford.

A spokesman for Halifax said: “Visits to our Maldon branch have fallen over recent years, as many customers now choose to bank in different ways.

“When the branch closes in June, customers can use the local post office for everyday banking, which is a short walk away, access cash at the nearby free-to-use ATMs, alongside other ways to bank such as over the phone and online."
