TIPTREE Road Runners ladies showed the way at the opening 53-12 cross-country league fixture at Hylands Park by winning their category in Pool B.

A great debut by Tracey Harrington in 19th place and a strong 35th place by Helen Ivory gave Tiptree the top points total.

With great back-up from Tina Clarke (43rd), Carolyn Bownes (61st), Wendy Smalley (67th), in her first cross-country, and Dawn Shilling (74th), the ladies helped Tiptree secure second place overall in Pool B, behind Halstead.

The men’s team finished third with Mark Brewer leading the four-man scoring team home in 52nd, followed by Simon Morgan 55th, Greg McDowell 56th and Ted Skinner in 92nd.

Phill Clarke (93rd) and Jamie Fairfull (96th) just missed out on scoring positions with their top 100 finish, while Graeme Moon made an encouraging start to the season in 121st, followed by Malcolm Bailey in 131st.

Jim Slater, recovering from injury, ran cautiously round the demanding course to finish 162nd, followed by Ian Linton (183rd), Bob Sees (196th), Jeff Fairfull (201st) and Barry Dobson (207th).

In the under-17 girls’ event, Abigail Morgan finished fourth.
