There is a new name sitting top of the division one south table and it came courtesy of the performance of the day from our north Essex sides in the Thurlow Nunn League.

Wivenhoe Town capped a superb week by winning 4-1 at Burnham Ramblers as the Dragons leapt to the summit of the fledgling standings.

They had beaten Brightlingsea Regent Reserves 3-0, before enjoying a 7-1 success against Newbury Forest in the Essex Senior Cup in midweek and this latest success saw Gary Monti’s side continue their free-scoring ways.

Set pieces proved lucrative for Wivenhoe, with Peter Maina, Dean Merrett and David Lopez all finding the back of the net from either free-kicks or corners before half-time and Maina doubled his own personal tally after the break to wrap up the win.

Another side scoring four were Holland FC, who moved up to fourth in the table with a 4-2 win against Leyton Athletic.

Steve Eaton was on target twice for Holland and Matt Gray and Joe Martin added one apiece.

Coggeshall United are still waiting for their first win, though, after being pegged back to a 1-1 draw by Newbury Forest and Brightlingsea Reserves also drew as they had a goalless stalemate against Frenford on Friday night.

In the premier division, Brantham Athletic had success on the road as a Regan Pelling goal 15 minutes from the end earned the Imps a 1-0 win at Kirkley & Pakefield.

However, it was a different story on the road in the BetVictor Isthmian League premier division for Brightlingsea Regent.

The R’s were left still looking for their first win of the campaign as a late Charlie Lindoe goal proved only a consolation in a 5-1 defeat at leaders Haringey Borough.
