STANWAY Rovers manager Danny Slatter has warned his team they must be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to maintain their winning start to the season.

Slatter’s side have been flawless so far, winning four matches in all competitions.

They travel to Long Melford in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division tonight followed by Saturday’s crunch FA Cup clash against Tilbury.

“The wins have been by a solitary goal but there have been some individual mistakes and we haven't been clinical enough," he said.

"Against Thetford on Saturday, we had a penalty miss in the first ten minutes and should have been out of sight after 20 minutes.”

After being 1-0 down at half-time, Stanway roared back with goals from Jon Carver and Marly Andrews to secure another vital win.

However, Slatter has urged his side to tighten up defensively and take their chances in front of goal.

“If we can erase the silly mistakes, stop the soft goals going in and be more clinical in the opposition box then hopefully it will be an easier ride for us,” added the Stanway boss.

Slatter argues that victory tonight against Long Melford will set his side up perfectly for the FA Cup preliminary round visit to Tilbury.

“If we do get the result it takes us into Saturday for the FA Cup with a bit more of a buzz," he added.

"Winning breeds confidence and it’s good to have that winning feeling.

"Hopefully, come tonight, we will have another three points on the board.”
