BURNHAM Hillside bowlers enjoyed charity success despite difficult weekend

Tony Rowling, Peter Cox and Jan Cook lifted Burnham Hillside’s Charity Cup after a competitive day of bowls and fundraising.

The Sunday afternoon friendly at Witham Bowls Club on August 30 was played over five mixed triples.

The visitors lost all five rinks, with Witham recording a convincing 108-52 overall victory on a green which proved difficult for Burnham’s players.

David Carter, David Howlett and Sid Curtis were beaten 18-13 on rink two.

John Wilson, Tony Brock and Val Hyam lost 25-9 on rink three.

Ken Neale, Lynne Parlour and Hazel Bradley went down 24-7 on rink four.

Tony Parlour, Brian Kettlety and Steve Nicholls were defeated 15-11 on the other rink four.

Luke Kettlety, John Howlett and Louise Hyam completed the afternoon’s results with a 26-12 loss on rink six.

The weekend’s other major event was the annual charity day at Burnham Hillside, held on bank holiday Monday, August 31.

Organised by Patsy Hammond and Kevin Olley, the event attracted 36 players, arranged into 12 triples teams.

The teams played four separate games of six ends, with the final standings remaining undecided until the last contest had been completed.

An opening spider competition saw Lynne Parlour take home the prize of a bottle of gin and tonic.

Players also supported a raffle featuring prizes donated by members and friends.

Wendy Parkhouse managed the bar, assisted by a number of volunteers throughout the day.

The bowling was competitive and the event maintained a strong social atmosphere before official scorer Olley calculated the final positions.

Rowling, Cox and Cook finished as the winners and were presented with the Charity Cup by club president Christine Reynolds.

Reynolds thanked everyone who took part and raised money for her chosen charity, the Salvation Army.

Two pairs from the club also reached the final day of the Coronation Shield and Plate at Chelmsford Bowls Club on Sunday, 30 August.

David Gamble and Nigel Barnes contested the Shield, while Reynolds and Paulette Norfolk represented the club in the Plate.

Gamble and Barnes won through to the Shield final but finished runners-up after losing by only a few shots.

Reynolds and Norfolk were unable to progress as far in the Plate and finished fourth in the play-offs.

The Dengie Hundred Bowling Association Finals were held at Southminster Bowls Club on Saturday, 29 August, despite persistent rain.

All the scheduled matches were completed, with Peter Gaywood beating Peter Argent 21-16 in the singles.

Roger Thurgood and Steve Saward defeated Nigel Barnes and Nic Hull 24-22 in the pairs.

Thurgood, Barry Heighway and Steve Thrumble beat Hazel Bradley, Reynolds and Steve Nicholls 21-6 in the knock-out triples.

Keith Lodge, Kevin Olley and Sid Curtis won the league final 18-9 against Richard English, Norfolk and Ken Mansfield.

Hillside thanked Southminster for hosting the finals and providing hospitality.
