BOWLERS took part in an afternoon of competition for the 2026 Burnham Hillside Bowls Club Ladies Captain's Day.

The event took place at the Burnham Hillside Bowling Club on Thursday, August 6.

The lady captain, Lynne Parlour, welcomed six bowlers from Tillingham, Southminster, and Maldon, joining 16 Burnham bowlers for a day of bowling.

The competition consisted of three games of six ends, with teams randomly selected for each match.

Karen Hull emerged victorious in the pre-game spider event, earning a bottle of spirit from Lynne Parlour.

A raffle was held featuring numerous prizes donated by the attending bowlers.

After the games, everyone gathered for a three-course salad meal, prepared and served by six of Burnham's volunteer male bowlers, wearing white shirts, bow ties and black trousers.

The bar was managed by Tony Rowling and Brian Holloway, while Wendy Parkhouse and Marilyn Rowling took charge of raffle ticket sales.

As the scores were tallied, it was revealed two ladies had tied with equal scores of 15.

However, after a count back of ends won, Jean Etherington from Tillingham was declared the winner and received her prize from Lynne Parlour.

The captain also presented gifts to all the male volunteers for their contributions.

In league action, both of Burnham's C&D Wednesday night teams played on August 5.

Team A faced a tough challenge against Maldon A, resulting in a hard-fought draw with an overall score of 50 to 50, earning six league points for Burnham.

Meanwhile, the B team triumphed over Writtle C, winning all three rinks with a score of 68 to 39, securing 10 league points and positioning them at the top of their division with one game remaining.
