MALDON and Tiptree’s women’s side claimed their first draw of pre-season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at AFC Leyton, writes LEE WITNEY.
Having put in some impressive performances that ultimately ended in defeat against Brentwood Town and Southend United in their first two games, the Jammers travelled to London to meet fellow tier seven side, AFC Leyton.
On a sweltering Sunday afternoon, the hosts took an early lead. A looping cross was tipped away by Sophie Drake, but luck wasn’t on the Maldon keeper’s side as the ball fell to a Leyton player at the back post who had the simple job of steering the ball home.
Maldon settled well after going behind and Amy Jacobs was a constant attacking outlet. She had a couple of chances within moments of each other that rolled just past the far post.
The pressure eventually told with 26 minutes gone as Maldon bagged an equaliser. Jacob’s through ball led to a mix-up between goalkeeper and defender and allowed Ellie Jones to nip in roll the ball into an empty net.
The Jammers should have taken the lead with 38 minutes played, but the Leyton keeper did well to deny a one on one.
More chances came for Maldon as the game wore on. Amy Yeldham did well to get in front of her defender at the front post, but the Leyton player did well to recover and put the ball out for a corner.
With 20 minutes left, a foul on Jones led to a free-kick that Georgia Young floated to the back post. The ball just missed a blue and white shirt as another chance came and went.
Another late free-kick from Jacobs stung the palms of the Leyton goalkeeper in what proved to be the last meaningful action of the afternoon.
The full time whistle brought the curtain down on another impressive Maldon outing as they step up their preparations for their first ever league campaign.
That begins on September 7 at home to Brightlingsea Regent.
