Burnham Hillside BC Ladies Captain's Day saw an enjoyable day of friendly competition and camaraderie.
Lady Captain Christine Reynolds invited eight bowlers from Tillingham, Southminster, and Maldon who joined 27 local bowlers to participate in the annual event.
Three games of six ends were played, and despite a small downpour towards the end, everyone enjoyed a day of varying bowling skills and lots of chatter throughout the afternoon.
One of the highlights of the day was the raffle with numerous prizes generously donated by the participants.
The winners of the raffle were all smiles, adding an extra touch of merriment to the day.
Once the games were over, participants sat down to a well-deserved three-course salad meal, prepared and served by the volunteer men's bowlers from Burnham.
This effort by the volunteers, led by Sid Curtis, Dennis Bonning, John Noble, Peter Cox, Bob Hollis and Terry Jerome, was enhanced by the smart appearance of the men in white shirts, bow ties, and black trousers.
Attention to detail extended to local volunteers Tony Rowling, Wendy Parkhouse, and Marilyn Rowling, who showed excellent management skills hosting the bar and raffle, according to the event organisers.
When the scorecards were checked Val Hyam emerged as the clear winner.
She received her prize from Lady Captain Christine Reynolds, who also expressed her gratitude to all the male volunteer workers by gifting them tokens of appreciation.
The day concluded with a heartfelt moment when Val Hyam, as club president, presented a bouquet to the Lady Captain Christine Reynolds on behalf of all the lady bowlers from the club, marking an excellent conclusion to the day's events.
Further, on August 7, both of Burnham's C&D League teams were playing in their second-last games.
The 'A' team competed against Danbury's 'A' team, jostling towards a thrilling win by securing 7 of the available league points, despite both teams being at the bottom of Division 1.
However, the 'B' team's semi-final match at Writtle against Writtle's 'C' team faced a setback.
Being in the second position in division 4, Burnham had high hopes for a win.
However, Writtle outplayed Burnham and the high-scoring match ended with Writtle winning the match 67/31, leaving Burnham with only two league points.
To wrap up the sporting week, on August 11, a team of four mixed triple teams attempted to beat the heat and the competition at Stock & Buttsbury Bowls Club.
Despite some exceptional play, Burnham lost all four triples in an otherwise friendly fixture.
Burnham Hillside BC team remains open to new members.
