A large field of golfers entered this year's Captains Charity Cup at Five lakes. The main purpose of this event is raise money for the the Captain's nominated charity.

This year's captain Alan Riches whose nominated charity is The Wooden Spoon who raise money for under privileged children.

Most of the entry fees and prizes are presented to the captain, this year's event raised over £200 which Alan will add to money raised throughout the season.

This year's competition was a very close affair with a few golfers scoring 37 points including the captain, Ian Kirkman, Gregg Barrett, Chris Hamblion, Matt Foot, Sandy Hood, Will Boniface and Dale Whitnell closely followed by Billy Millar who scored a respectable 38 points.

However, this year's prize winners were Dave Rogers (7) in third place with 39 points followed by Brian Ball (14) with 40 points however this year's Charity Cup winner was Mike Kettle (15) with 41 points.

Earlier this month, four players from Five Lakes Golf Club reached the semi-finals of the National Seniors Golf Classic, a team singles competition, played in a four ball format, for players over 50 and organised by the Seniors Golf Association.

Players from over one hundred teams from all over the country initially took place in the two competitions.

Five Lakes achieved their route to the semi-finals by beating five clubs from around East Anglia.

Their most notable win was away at Bush Hill GC in Enfield in the previous round where Five Lakes took the honours from at team that had remained unbeaten at home in all its earlier rounds.

The Five Lakes Team of Bill Guthrie, Tony Tyler, Barry Turner and Norman Davies travelled to Tewkesbury Park Golf and Country Club for the semi-final encounter with Test Valley G C from Michledever near Basingstoke.

In spite of putting up stern resistance for much of the contest, the long hitting pair from Test Valley triumphed over Five Lakes' Davies and Turner although the latter limited further damage, when 5 down, by winning three holes on the run to reduce the arrears to lose by only 2 holes.

Davies went down 4 and 3.

In the other four ball, Tyler was leading by one hole coming up the par three 16th hole.

His opponent pulled back with a par here and then went on to win the match by 1 hole.

Bill Guthrie kept the flag flying for Five Lakes by winning his match 3 and 2.

Test Valley went on to win the final by beating the defending champions, Kedleston Park at the first extra hole, the sides having squared the match 2-2.
