IN a disastrous year for the arts in south Essex – well everywhere, which saw venues closed from the Thameside in Thurrock, to Basildon’s Towngate and the Focal Point in Southend, many having lost their livelihoods overnight although some organisations showed bravery, initiative and a wartime spirit to try to keep the arts alive in this lively region.

Many other arts venues have fought the good fight since the pandemic struck, decimating an industry that had been fighting back. At the head of the pack when it comes to restarting Panto-land over the Christmas period is Thurrock with their virtual panto being staged by Polka Dot Pantomimes to bring a little bit of fun, and fairytale adventures into everyone’s lives.

As we are approaching the season of goodwill, I suggest that everyone – the local authorities, arts supporter groups and the general public all work together to ensure that whatever delectable entertainment is put on this Christmas is well supported. I shall be watching the Thameside Pantomime online.

Let us hope all those engaged in the arts in south Essex can again begin to add to our entertainment, our enjoyment of our heritage and education for us all.
