BUSHTUCKER trials were on the menu when excited youngsters got creative ahead of the Christmas period.

The coronavirus pandemic resulted in numerous schools being unable to take part in their usual nativity performances.

But that did not stop Lee Chapel Primary School pupils enjoying a range of fun activities ahead of breaking up for the festivities.

Students at the Basildon-based school ventured into the jungle in true I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here-style and took on their very own bushtucker trials.

The hit ITV show - which was won this year by Essex’s very own Giovanna Fletcher - proved inspirational as the youngsters and teachers went into the unknown.

Shiven Chetty, assistant headteacher at Lee Chapel, said: “To end an outstanding autumn term, the children at Lee Chapel decided to celebrate.

“Year 1 pupils took on bushtucker trials like in I’m a Celebrity.

“Children had to hook the spider, pin snake tongues and, if they were brave enough, place their hands into feely boxes, not knowing what was inside.

“It all ended with the teachers having to eat something wonderfully revolting, which included for one unlucky teacher cold beans!”

More fun activities were enjoyed by pupils in other year groups at Lee Chapel.

Year 2 paid tribute to the emergency services, while Year 3 got stuck into Olympic-themed games.

Year 6 also rounded off the final week of their World War Two topic.

Shiven added: “Year 2 celebrated our real-life heroes, the emergency services.

“Year 3 children enjoyed some exciting Olympic activities including chariot racing using hula hoops.

“Year 6 celebrated the final week of their World War Two topic with a traditional street party of the kind seen during Britain’s first celebration of VE Day 75 years ago and they also learnt to dance the Charleston.

“The children had an absolute blast.”
