A woman has died after a serious crash on the M11 near Harlow.
The southbound carriageway, between junction eight for Stansted and junction seven for Harlow, remains closed while police carry out an investigation.
Police report four vehicles, including an Audi, a BMW and a VW Passat were involved in the crash, which took place shortly after 10.10pm on Saturday.
A woman, who was a passenger in the Audi, sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries and later died in hospital.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "The fourth vehicles failed to stop at the scene of the collision and we need to trace that vehicle and speak to the driver.
"At this stage we do not have a description of the vehicle We need to speak to anyone who saw what happened or has dash cam footage of it.
"In particular we need to speak to anyone who saw how the Audi and another vehicle were being driven and interacted in the moments before the collision took place."

Police expect the road to be shut into this morning while they investigate the crash.
Highways England estimate the road will likely remain closed throughout the morning.
A spokesman said: "For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and you may wish to re-route or delay your journey."
