RUGBY fans filled pubs, clubs and sofas to watch the World Cup final on Saturday morning.

Venues such as Westcliff Rugby Club and the Monaco Pub on Canvey were full to the brim with anxious England and South African supporters as the final kicked off at 9am from Japan.

Sadly, despite valiant efforts, it was not England’s day, and South Africa took home the trophy by 32 points to 12.

Despite the disappointing result for English fans, many were still supportive of the team and how far they had come.

Christine Boynett from Southend said: “My son and wife have been in Japan just over a week now, he said with it being the first Asian World Cup the Japanese hospitality has been outstanding.

“I have been sent lots of pics and it has looked awesome. At the end of the day England have played well since day one, and I thought they would win but on the day, South African defence was too strong for them, and were worthy winners, but our boys should feel proud as they did their best.”

James Pendrigh said: “Unfortunately I have to say the best team win on the day.

“So congratulations to South Africa but well done England, keep your heads up you did your best.”
