CLAIMS retired residents are being excluded from parking outside their homes have been denied by Southend Council.

Fears were raised after those staying at Homecove House were allegedly told they would not be eligible for the resident only scheme in Holland Road, Westcliff.

Homecove House consists of 140 flats for retired people, but only has 46 parking spaces, with around 70 residents still using and needing their cars.

There are entrances to the complex on Holland Road and Palmiera Road.

The residents now say they are scared to go out because they won’t have a parking space to come back to.

Barbara Beech, 82, said: “To be told just last week, it doesn’t give anyone a chance to do anything.

“We want our independence; we want to go out and enjoy our lives. I’ve found myself turning down invitations because I’m worried that I will lose my car parking space. They may as well lock the doors and keep us in here.”

Lois Perry, Barbara’s granddaughter, said: “The residents feel betrayed by the council.

“All of the residents are elderly, and mobility really is an issue. They all need easy access to their cars outside on Holland Road, near the buildings main entrance.”

Resident Godfrey Clark, 88, said: “It appears to to be some sort of unfair, preferential selection going on. We shouldn’t have to be fighting.” Greta Vogal, 102, said: “I’ve been at Homecove for 11 years and think the situation is a disgrace.”

Southend Council apologised for any confusion.

Councillor Ron Woodley said: “I would like to reassure residents of Homecove House that they are still included in the resident permit scheme, and can still apply for further permits now and in the future. If this is to change at any point, we will contact the residents directly, however at this stage, we are not planning to exclude the Homecove House residents from this scheme. Any changes to the scheme would be subject to full consultation.”
