SOUTHEND’S homeless charity is holding a fundraising football tournament, called the World Cup-on-Sea in a bid to raise vital cash.

Members of the public are being encouraged to attend and show their support at Roots Hall, with the tournament set to kick-off at 9am on Saturday.

Some 28 businesses are taking part in the World Cup style tournament, with the aim being to raise £20,000 to share between Harp and Trust Links.

Organised and sponsored by firm Nelson Chambers, an employment consultancy firm, the event is set to be a fun-filled, family friendly football festival.

Michael McGaw, director of Nelson Chambers, said: “This should be a fabulous local event for businesses and families whilst raising much-needed funds for our charity partners Harp and Trust Links.

“Nelson Chambers recruitment, along with our sponsorship partner Lloyds Bank, are so proud to be giving back to our local community.

“Local charity work is central to Nelson Chamber’s business ethos and we hope that everyone has a fabulous day out to raise our £20,000 target.”

Children’s activities will take place from 11am until 3pm in the Roots Hall car park, including free-of-charge face painting and inflatable fun.

A spokesman for Harp added: “Come and join us for the inaugural World Cup on Sea football tournament at the prestigious Roots Hall.

“Local professional teams will take part in a knockout tournament to raise funds for two local charities, Harp and Trustlinks.”

Every year, Harp helps more than 1,000 people in Southend who are rough sleeping, sofa surging or at risk of losing their home.

Entrance to the tournament is £3 for adults, with those aged 17 and under going free if accompanied by an adult.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Free parking is available in the Roots Hall car park.
